      Per the 1877 Illustrated Atlas of the Upper Ohio River and Valley from Pittsburgh, Pa. to Cincinnati, Ohio, Thomas and Sarah Coleman owned a 2,500 acre farm at Muses Bottom, Jackson County, West Virginia which borders the Ohio River.

      Thomas' father died when he was two yrs old, his mother died when he was three. Thomas was cared for by his uncle Peter Anderson & wife Margaret. Worked at many pioneer jobs, blacksmith & finally on a keel boat. He rose from cook to steersman and became the owner of his own boat. At a young age had his first farm on Pond Creek. He purchased more land till he owned 3,000 acres. Most of the land was in Muses Bottom. Thomas was a Justice of the Peace by appointment of the Governor of Va. & later elected by the people. He was the first Postmaster of Muses Bottom. He served fifteen yrs on the County Court during 1840-1856. Upon his death land was divided among his ten children.
