| Miller, Donald Boyd Tuff is pictured here with one of his many fox hounds. Fox hunting was a sport enjoyed by a lot of the men on WV Route 87. I can remember hearing the dogs run at night. Each hound had a distinctive bark and could be recognized by the owners of the dogs. |
| Rail Fence An example of the Rail Fences that were built by the John Maranda Miller Family. This fence was located on the "Miller Homestead" on the Jackson Mason Counties Line. |
| Miller Homestead Miller Homestead located on the Jackson and Mason County Line on WV Route 87. One of the fireside stories I remember was about John Maranda Miller and the front porch of this house. President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued the Gold Recall Act in March of 1933. It was rumored that John Miller decided that he was not going to comply with this recall. It was said that he took a lard bucket, lined it with his paper money making a nest, then added all of his gold pieces to the bucket. Several people saw the bucket so there is some truth to it. (Old family saying "where there is smoke, there is fire). He then took the bucket and buried it. He always told everyone that he could set on the front porch of the old home place and keep an eye on his money. This house, barn and out buildings are gone. The barn was struck by lighting in the mid fifties. This happened on a Thursday night. Most of the community were attending prayer meeting at Longview Chuch. There is nothing like the lights going out in the chuch and seeing a big ball of fire hit the big barn on the opposite hill side to put the fear of God in you. Prayer Meetings were very intense and filled with fire and brim stone. Some saw it has a sign that we should change our ways. In a few days things were back to normal. Albert and Amy Miller Sissons owned the farm at that time. |
| West Virginia Route 87 WV Route 87 about quarter of a mile west of Jackson/Mason County Line. This property has been owned by John Miller(my Great Grandfather) and later by my Uncle Cliff and and Aunt Zina Miller Hughes and their heirs for over a hundred years or longer. Aunt Zina's son lives on the property now.
At one time there was a saw-mill and a threshing machine located on the property.
This property is often referred to as Gobblers Knob. This was a name my Uncle Samuel Miller gave it when he lived on the property in the sixties and seventies.
On the back side of the property behind the barn was the pond John Miller II used to run his steam treshing machine. The the threshing machine is now located at the Farm Musem in Point Pleasant, WV.
The drive way to the property has changed and the old log house was burned to the ground but my memories of the place linger on. |

| Murder of Benjamin Anderson Account of the Murder of Benjamin Anderson
There have been many questions and few answers over the murder of Benjamin Anderson by John M. Miller. The only account I can give was stories told by the fireside. I have posted as a separate file what was in the newspaper at the time (which was posted on RootsWeb.com in Oct 2006. I am going to give you my account of what happened on that fateful day. There was a flash flood on Cow Run.
I can speak from experience about the flash floods on Cow Run. That stream could be as smooth and tranquil as a summer day; but a hard fast ran would send the creek out of banks taking with it every thing in it's path. That is what happened so I was told about the rail fence. A flash flood had come down Cow Run and washed the rail fence from John Miller's property to Ben Anderson's property. John and his wife Elzina Barr Miller drove their team and wagon down Cow Run to reclaim their rail fence. Ben Anderson lived on the other side of Cow Run where the rail fence had landed after the flood. Each man was armed. Both claimed the fence. An disagreement took place about the ownership of the fence. According to the stories I was told John Miller shot Ben Anderson in self-defense. In the end charges against John Miller were dropped in Jackson County Circuit Court. |
